Creating Positive Habits and a More Positive You

By Gary Gzik | Submitted On June 10, 2010

You brush your teeth twice a day, go for a walk with the dog every night after dinner and clean the house every Saturday morning. But, at sometime in your life, these things were none existent and not in your normal routine - or should I say, they weren't a habit. Creating positive habits, like the ones mentioned above, doesn't have to be a chore. Every day you do things that are positive habits and you probably don't even know it. These habits, like washing your hands after attending the washroom, were easy to start because you used repetition. Most people can say they chew their food with their mouths closed; this is a positive habit that was formed when you were young. It took a while and a lot of drilling from your parents, but eventually, you have managed to recognize when you are chewing properly and when your food is on full display.

This positive habit was formed because you had the constant reminder to eat properly with your mouth closed. The formula isn't a secret, when you're creating positive habits you need repetition. Many studies have been done on creating positive habits, and the results have shown it takes as little as twenty-one days to conquer your wanted habits. Twenty-one days, seemingly long or short, is very important. During this time of creating a new positive habit, you are also eliminating negative ones. Just by taking the first step and thinking positively about the habit you would like to form, you are already breaking the pattern of thinking negatively and carrying on in your old ways. Creating positive habits is a repetitive process. Just as you were reminded to chew with your mouth closed, you need to constantly reinforce the idea of creating a new habit. You can easily start this process by writing down the positive things that you want to create in your life.

Maybe you want to exercise regularly, save more money, try a new meal once a week or incorporate more personal time into your schedule. Whatever it is, write it where you will see it daily. Once you have written down the main positive habits you would like to create, find smaller habits that you can start creating. For example, if you wrote down that you would like to eat healthier, under it you could begin a list of what foods you can change in your diet. Start with breakfast; list what you eat now and what you could replace it with. Maybe bacon and eggs can be changed to cereal and fruit. Every morning, when you peer into that fridge full of endless options, remind yourself that you are going to substitute your breakfast with something nutritious. When you find that breakfast has become a habit you no longer have to think about, move on to lunch and then dinner.

In no time, you will have completed your goal of creating positive habits for eating healthier because you broke it up into manageable habits that can be formed easier. When you are thinking about creating positive habits, remember that it's not impossible, get out the pen and paper and write down where you want to begin. And, rather than get frustrated with an overbearing list, make your habits manageable. If you spend too much time dwelling on the idea of making such a big change, it likely won't happen. Instead, go for your goal and realize that you can become a more positive you as you automatically accomplish more positive habits. 2/21/2021 Creating Positive Habits and a More Positive You https://ezinearticles.com/?Creating-Positive-Habits-and-a-More-Positive-You&id=4457033 2/2 Gary Gzik is a Corporate Trainer and CEO of the business consulting company BizXcel, Inc. which owns and operates Getting to Someday, a place where people go to achieve their goals and dreams.
